Hanukkah means "dedication," and it commemorates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem after its desecration by foreign forces. It is traditional to give small gifts to children on each night of Hanukkah. The celebration is enhanced with songs, games and toys such as a dreidel. However, the religious celebration (the lighting of the candles in the menorah) must come before the party. Each night a candle is lit in the menorah. A favorite Hanukkah food is latkes or potato pancakes.

Menorah - Menorah is a Hebrew word meaning "candelabrum." For Hanukkah, it refers to the nine-branched ceremonial lamp in which the Hanukkah candles are placed and then blessed. The nine-branched Hanukkah menorah has eight branches, one for each day of the holiday, and a ninth branch for the shamash or servant light. The menorah is displayed in the window of Jewish homes during this holiday.

Dreidel - Dreidel is a derivative of a German word meaning top and the game is an adaptation of an old gambling game. Hanukkah was one of the few times of the year rabbis permitted games of chance, so the dreidel was a natural for Hanukkah entertainment
