Kwanzaa
by Greer

Another celebration this time of year in America is Kwanzaa. Kwanzaa was established in 1966 during the Civil Rights Movement by Dr. Maulana Karenga as a means for African Americans to celebrate their cultural heritage.

Kwanzaa is designed to reinforce 7 basic values of African culture (Nguzo Saba) which build and reinforce family and community ideals. These values are Unity (Umoja), Self-Determination (Kujichagulia), Collective Work and Responsibility (Ujima), Cooperative Economics (Ujamaa), Purpose (Nia), Creativity (Kuumba) and Faith (Imani).

The greetings during Kwanzaa are in Swahili and gifts are given to children including books and a heritage symbol.

Kwanzaa is celebrated from December 26th through January 1.

Kwanzaa Symbols - Mazao (The Crops), Mkeka (The Mat), Kinara (The Candle Holder), Muhindi (The Corn), Mishumaa Saba (The Seven Candles), Kikombe cha Umoja (The Unity Cup), Zawadi (The Gifts), Bendera (The Flag), Nguzo Saba Poster (Poster of The Seven Principles).
